Experienced Nonprofit Leader Brings Strategic Vision and Passion for Improving Lives to Iconic Denver-Based Social Enterprise
Women’s Bean Project is thrilled to announce that Shelby Mattingly will step into the role of Chief Executive Officer beginning June 16. A seasoned nonprofit leader with a deep belief in the power of second chances, Mattingly brings more than two decades of experience in strategic planning, program innovation, and community-driven leadership. Shelby transitions to this role following the decision of long-time CEO Tamra Ryan to step down to pursue new opportunities.
Mattingly currently serves as CEO of Denver’s Early Childhood Council, advancing outcomes for young children, families, and educators through collaboration and systems improvement. Previously, she spent a decade leading Inside the Orchestra expanding access to multilingual music education programs for children and schools across Colorado and beyond.
“Shelby has a proven track record of leading organizational transformation and sustainability, and fostering inclusive, collaborative environments. Her leadership style is compassionate, creative, grounded, and forward-looking,” said Ellen Stein Wallace, Board Chair of Women’s Bean Project. “She brings a clear-eyed approach to organizational growth and impact. The board is excited to support her in guiding the next chapter of our mission.”
Mattingly holds a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in nonprofit management from the University of Colorado Denver and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Denison University. Throughout her career, she has been a champion for creating environments where all voices are welcomed, respected, and heard—especially those too often overlooked.
In Shelby’s words, “Sharing food has always been one of my most personal expressions of care, bringing people together and creating a sense of belonging. My professional purpose has been rooted in helping women and communities thrive. The work of Women’s Bean Project — to nourish people, build community, and create pathways to success — feels deeply personal to me. I’m honored to lead an organization that nurtures women’s potential, fosters economic independence, and builds lasting change.”
Outside of work, Mattingly finds joy in cooking and baking for friends and family, gardening, exploring the outdoors, creative writing, and caring for her ever-growing jungle of houseplants. She lives in Denver with her partner and their beloved dogs.
Women’s Bean Project has been a pioneering non-profit social enterprise since 1989. Serving women who have struggled to obtain and maintain employment, the Bean provides on-the-job training, life skills classes, career service assistance, and case management, with a goal of helping them on the path toward self-sufficiency.
