This homemade split pea soup recipe is a unique blend of curry and coriander adding spice to this otherwise sweet and creamy soup. Homemade split pea soup is rich in fiber, iron and protein, as well as low in fat. The humble pea never fails to please the palate. Mild curry flavor. You’ll add chicken broth or bouillon, water, butter or margarine, onion, and our yummy spices. Milk or heavy cream is optional.
Ingredients: Green split peas, spices: crushed red pepper, coriander, cumin, mace, cayenne pepper, mustard powder, fenugreek, cinnamon, ginger, salt, turmeric (for color), and garlic.
Slow Cooker Instructions:
Rinse and the peas as instructed in the recipe, then put into the slow cooker in the morning on low heat with the spices, beans, water and optional ingredients. Cook on low/slow all day, checking the liquid level occasionally. Add additional water as needed. By the evening the peas should be ready to eat.
Instant Pot Instructions:
- Chop onions, vegetables, and other add-in ingredients as instructed on the box.
- Add all ingredients to the instant pot. Cover with 8 cups of water or broth, or just enough to cover ingredients with 1 inch of liquid. Do not overfill your pot.
- Close the lid, and set pot to cook.
- Cook for 15 minutes on high pressure, then natural release for at least 10 minutes before quick-releasing.
- Once pot has depressurized, stir gently and serve.
General Tips
- Instant pot cooking times can vary greatly due to size, brand, and even home location. It may take a few tries to find the perfect cook time for your preferences.
- Do not soak beans before cooking. While cooking beans in the instant pot does not require soaking, it is still a good idea to rinse your beans before cooking.
- Many instant pots have a sauté setting that is perfect for browning vegetables, onions, and any other additions to your soup before pressure cooking. This is optional, and our soups will still turn out delicious without it.
Being a vegetarian I had never made split pea soup since the recipes always called for ham. But your split pea recipe with the spice packet was a winner! It was easy to make and yummy. Thank you for a healthy, delicious soup!
This split pea soup has a great blend of spices. I make split pea soup often but with different herbs and spices. WBP split pea soup was a delish change of pace. I’d buy it again.
This is the best split pea soup ever. ML
I LOVE IT! This was my 3rd time to make split pea soup! My first time, I actually ran it through my new Instant Pot 3 times before reading a warning that split pea soup should not be cooked in the Instant Pot because it might clog the vent spout. That did not happen to me – and the recipe was actually better than my second batch of Split Pea Soup! The second time, I did not have the Women's Bean Project Soup Mix, and I missed the spices!
I gave a box of the Women's Bean Project Spicy Split Pea Soup Mix, as well as their 10 Bean Soup Mix to my son and his wife when I went to Denver to visit them before Christmas (because I think it is so great)!
The reason I looked up this web site today is so that I can place an order for several boxes. The last box of 10 bean soup I made was also fantastic!
I forgot to but carrots today for the Split Pea recipe, so I used 1/2 can of raw pumpkin as a substitute! Two bowls in, I think that it's YUMMY!
Thank you!

This soup is so delicious! The flavors are amazing. My husband and I love it! I have already bought another box and will being trying the bean one too.
Super delicious! The spices are perfect!
I followed the directions using 4 cups of vegetable broth, adding water when needed to keep the beans covered, and milk after the veggies were added. Lunch is ready!
I’ll be making this again. Thank you!
One of the best pea soups I’ve ever had. Wanting to duplicate it. Just delicious.

Are all the spices on the bottom of email go in if you don't have spice pack??
We loved this soup! I had fun making it. I decided to add ham and half cup heavy cream and it turned out delicious! Thank’s Woman’s Bean Project =)
