Spicy Split Pea Soup Recipe

This homemade split pea soup recipe is a unique blend of curry and coriander adding spice to this otherwise sweet and creamy soup. Homemade split pea soup is rich in fiber, iron and protein, as well as low in fat. The humble pea never fails to please the palate. Mild curry flavor. You’ll add chicken broth or bouillon, water, butter or margarine, onion, and our yummy spices. Milk or heavy cream is optional.

Ingredients

  • 1 package Spicy Split Pea Soup Mix
  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable stock
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 4-5 carrots diced
  • 1 spice packet included in soup mix
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup milk (optional ingredient)
  • 1-2 cups lean ham diced and to taste (optional ingredient)

Instructions

  1. Remove spice packet.
  2. Wash and drain beans.
  3. Assemble peas, broth, and water in a 4 qt. pot.
  4. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer gently for 1 hour uncovered, or until peas are almost tender.
  5. Add water as needed so that the peas stay well covered.
  6. While peas are simmering, saute carrots and onion in butter or oil until tender and add spice packet.
  7. Stir veggie mixture into peas; add milk if desired.
  8. Simmer an additional 20 minutes.
  9. Cooking times may vary.

Recipe Notes

Ingredients: Green split peas, spices: crushed red pepper, coriander, cumin, mace, cayenne pepper, mustard powder, fenugreek, cinnamon, ginger, salt, turmeric (for color), and garlic.
